NOTE:

Text from back side of cover:

This is not a Beatles Live LP. It is an attempt to conjure up the atmosphere of a Beatles show from 1961 by taking the first documented Beatles set list and presenting the songs they sang in the order in which they were performed. In order to enhance the fantasy listening experience, live performances of the music have been used where available.

Drummer John Cochrane of Wump & His Werbles transcribed this list of songs the Beatles played when the two groups performed together at the Aintree Institute sometime in January/February 1961.The date can't be pinned down to anything more specific than somewhere between the release date of the most recent record the Beatles played that night (The Shirelles Boys issued in January 1961) and the group's departure for a season at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg at the end of March 1961.

But then again, it may have been at the Lathom Hall in Seaforth...Werbles singer Rod Punt recalls "I'll never forget it. We had just bought a new Selmer Truvoice Selectatape amplifier and they asked if they could borrow it. We lent it to them and they went on stage and started tuning up. John Lennon had his new Rickenbacker, played one chord and four strings broke all at once. He came off stage and we all helped him to restring it. They started playing and we watched from the wings. Paul was on rhythm guitar and we noticed that between numbers he would plug his guitar in and pluck a few notes. When the band started playing he would take the jack-plug out! We were convinced he wasn't playing at all. We then went out front to watch and, horror of horrors, Stuart Sutcliffe was playing bass guitar through our brand-new amp. It was bouncing all over the place. We never let anyone borrow our gear again!"

The Aintree Institute was built in Longmoor Lane, Aintree by jam maker W.P. Hartley for his workers in 1896 as an educational and social centre. The Beatles appeared here thirty-one times for promoter Brian Kelly's BeeKay Productions between January 7th 1961 and January 27th 1962. The venue was situated behind the Black Bull pub, close to the Aintree racecourse."

Brian Kelly employed Bob Wooler to stage the dances for him and compere the shows. Mark Lewisohn relates how Wooler instructed them to prepare for their performances in darkness behind the curtains while he was playing records. "For them alone, to command everyone's attention to something really special, Wooler played the opening cavalry charge of Rossini's William Tell Overture. Lifting the needle when the fanfare finished, he would announce ‘It's the Beatles!'...and there they'd be, blinking in the light and completely in command, rocking, stomping and thrilling."

By the time the Beatles played their last gig at the Institute, Brian Epstein was in charge of their affairs. For some reason, Brian Kelly took a dislike to Epstein and paid the group's £15 fee (£250 in today's money) in loose change. It would be the last time the group played for Kelly.

Red Sails In The Sunset,
